Description
Provides financial assistance for food. CalFresh (also known as Food Stamps or SNAP) helps families and individuals with limited income buy nutritious foods. Many working individuals qualify. 

Benefits are provided on an electronic benefit transfer card (EBT card) that is used like an ATM card and accepted at most grocery stores and farmer's markets. To replace a lost EBT card or to find a location that accepts EBT, call EBT Customer Service or visit website: www.ebt.ca.gov.

Social Security Help

Description
Offers information about benefits and what to do to obtain a social security card, along with how to replace a lost card. Processes applications for:

  • Retirement benefits (SS) to workers over age 62 and eligible dependents

  • Disability Benefits (SSDI) to workers severely disabled prior to age 65

  • Supplemental Security Income (SSI) for the needy aged, blind, and disabled individuals

  • Survivor Benefits to eligible dependents of deceased workers, including a lump-sum payment to assist with funeral expenses (limited to a surviving spouse or an entitled child)

  • Medicare enrollment (and card replacement)

Website allows access to personal Social Security benefit information including a benefit verification letter, the ability to check benefit and payment information and earning records, change address and phone number and start or change direct deposit of benefit payments.

CalWorks Agency

Description
Provides temporary cash aid and employment services to low-income families with children, and pregnant women. In order to qualify for cash aid, most able-bodied parents are required to participate in CalWORKs Employment Services (Welfare to Work), which helps them prepare for, find and retain employment. The program offers child care, transportation, financial assistance and other services to help with the transition from welfare to work. Adults can receive up to 48 months of cash aid in their lifetime, with some exceptions.

Family Stabilization (FaSt) is a component of CalWORKs that helps families experiencing certain destabilizing crises which can include mental health or substance abuse related needs, lack of safety due to domestic violence or homelessness or risk of homelessness. Provides resources to assist families in overcoming crises so that they are able to participate fully in CalWORKs.

The CalWORKS Housing Support Program helps families experiencing homelessness to secure and maintain housing.

Cal-Learn serves CalWORKs clients under 19 years old who are custodial parents or pregnant. These teen parents are encouraged to stay in or return to high school and earn a diploma or its equivalent. Provides bonuses and sanctions, as well as needed supportive services and intensive case management.

Benefits are issued using electronic benefit transfer (EBT), similar to an ATM debit card, which is accepted at most grocery stores. General Assistance

Description:
Provides temporary cash aid to eligible adults with no children who do not qualify for other public assistance. Provides three months of assistance to eligible, employable adults, and longer-term assistance to eligible adults who have a temporary disability or who have a long-term disability and are awaiting Supplemental Security Income (SSI) approval. General Relief assistance is considered a loan and must be repaid.

Eligibility:

Open to adults 18 and up (and emancipated minors under 18) with no or low income, and no dependent children, who live in Siskiyou County and are applying for other forms of continuing support, or who are not eligible for other support

- be unemployed through no fault of his/her own.
- be physically able to work.
- be available for work.
- be ready and willing to immediately accept work.

- be approved for training before training benefits can be paid.
